QUBRFC Launches Premier U20 Team in JP Flanagan

Queen’s University Belfast RFC (QUBRFC) has taken a historic step by launching a new Premier U20 team, set to compete in the Leinster U20 JP Flanagan Competition for the 2025/26 season.

They will be first Ulster side ever to do so.

Developed in partnership with the Ulster Rugby Academy, this groundbreaking initiative represents a major step forward in strengthening the rugby performance pathway for young players in the province. The team will provide a competitive, high-performance environment for student-athletes moving from school rugby into adult competition—while continuing their education alongside peers.

The JP Flanagan League, widely regarded as the top U20 competitions in Ireland, will offer QUBRFC players weekly exposure to elite-level rugby and a clearer route to senior club (Energia AIL) and provincial pathways.

David Chambers, Rugby Development Officer at QUBRFC, said:
"This is a fantastic development for both Queen’s and Ulster Rugby. The new U20 programme fills a long-standing gap in the performance pathway, giving players a meaningful, competitive outlet during a crucial stage in their development. It keeps them in the game, connected to their education, and constantly developing, giving them opportunity within in the All-Ireland League and QUB and back into club after their studies."

With elite coaching, alignment with the Ulster Rugby Academy, and access to Queen’s world-class facilities, the new U20 side will become a central pillar in Queen’s University’s long-term rugby development strategy, focused on growing high-level student rugby and nurturing future provincial and national players.
